Looking for a swashbuckling adventure? Head on over to Pacific Coast Highway for a hidden gem in the the Laguna Beach area.
Nestled among bougie mansions stands on of the most unique and mysterious landmarks of Southern California. It’s called, Pirate Tower after retired naval captain Harold Kendrick who once owned the home on top of the cliff.
Kendrick was eccentric and would often dress in pirate garb for the locals, offering storytime and epic tales of his salty sea life. He hosted scavenger hunts for the kids with coins tucked away in this stone turret.
It’s not easily found using Google maps because you will end up at a gated community. So for all of you bold scallywags and wild-eyed buccaneers, I’ll give you the digital treasure map.
Directions:
Park along PCH where it intersects with Victoria Drive. Walk down the street to Sunset Terrace. On the right, in between two houses you’ll get to a long stairway that leads down to the far north ed of the public beach. Head a few paces in the sand to the right. Hike out onto the rocks and around the cliff. Go past a couple of homes and you’ll see it straight ahead.
A word of caution
If you go during high tide in the fall/winter, you could get caught by a crashing wave if you don’t set time the sets properly. Venture out only if you’re an experienced hiker, climber or swimmer. Or wait until the summer months and when it’s low tide.
Aye’ll see you next time, mateys!
