Our Nation’s Christmas Tree

The General Grant Tree was declared as our Nations Christmas Tree by President Calvin Coolidge in 1926. Decorations not necessary when it is this GINORMOUS!

What makes the General Grant the world’s widest-known sequoia and the third largest tree in the world is its massive trunk. It would take 20 people holding hands to circle around the base. This is no spindly little fir, Charlie Brown!

Located at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park on the General Grant Trail. It’s only a short 0.8 mile paved hike that explores the grove of giant sequoias around the loop. Perfect if you’ve got young kiddos! You can also extend the hike in this area by following the trail between Grant Grove and Grant Village.

While you’re out there on the loop, don’t miss the hollowed out log called, the Fallen Monarch. Running through a tunnel log is guaranteed to make you feel like a kid again.

These giant Sequoia trees resist decay for hundreds of years, even after they fall down. Dating back to the 1900’s, the Fallen Monarch sheltered construction crews and their horses as they slept inside the hollow log.

Visiting the Sequoias is bound to put anyone in the holiday spirit. What about you? Have you decorated your Christmas tree yet? Comment below.
