If you are new to overlanding and read my book for children, Jack and the Unicorn, then you may be wondering what was the inspiration behind the horn shaped tent of the vehicle that Pop-paw drove. It is actually the latest addition to our own Land Cruiser which we use in real life.
When Phil and I first started looking to upgrade our camp gear and invest in a roof top tent, we had three main considerations: convenience, comfort and price. We took our kids camping all the time when they were growing up, but we had the old school ground tents that were tedious to pitch. Then, there was the inflatable air mattress that would deflate during the night and we’d feel every rock and pebble underneath.
The roof top tent we purchased is waaay better! All we do is park, undo the latches, and the tent springs up on its own. Plus, it’s mobile and we can set it up anywhere we park our Land Cruiser. We even keep all of our bedding inside while we’re on the road. This means we can have a comfortable mattress pad, real blankets, and fluffy pillows ready and waiting as soon as we arrive. Then, we can go right to sleep if we get in late to our campsite.
As for price, we opted for something mid-range. What we ended up with is the Mamba 3 by Overland Vehicle Systems. Certainly there are others on the market that sell for considerably less or even more, but this particular one met our needs. This is not a sponsored post, by the way.
The video below is a quick review by Phil which covers some of the features and benefits of the tent we own. The installation was done by Cruiser Tech.
